If you only read one thingWhy Hybrid Work Can Become Toxic (4 minute read) âIt is important to recognize that some aspects of hybrid and remote work make toxicity more likely to occur.â I think hybrid is the worst of both worlds. Full remote is better. If you go hybrid make the same day mandatory for everyone. And be aware of the toxicity. https://hbr.org/2023/07/why-hybrid-work-can-become-toxic
Stories about AIHollywood writers fear losing work to AI (8 minute read) In other news, the coachman complain about cars. Itâs kind of interesting that the writers of âThe Walking Deadâ are walking dead. âOne of their key demands is that the studios and streaming giants agree to limits on the future use of AI-powered writing tools, such as ChatGPT.â If your industry demands this, itâs clear you need to get out. My prediction: Developers will demand this in 10 years. âFellow screenwriter Melissa Rundle says she was shocked at how quickly ChatGPT became a core issue of the ongoing labour dispute.â Developers will be too. https://www.bbc.com/news/business-66289583 The Rise of AI Girlfriends (6 minute read) The only good thing in the new Bladerunner was the AI Girlfriend. I was touched. Really. So donât dismiss the Rise of AI Girlfriends. Do they count as cheating? https://innovationnation.blog/p/the-rise-of-ai-girlfriends Stories Iâve enjoyed this weekTension Is Rising Around Remote Work (4 minute read) The discussion about remote work is not going away, I hear many executives who have forced people back two days a week and enjoy faster execution. I hear executives who lost candidates because they are not 100% remote. We have not achieved a stable consensus on remote work, what is clear: âHowever, the current exchange in which both sides are trying to âwinâ makes that type of collaborative dialogue extremely unlikely to occur.â https://hbr.org/2023/07/tension-is-rising-around-remote-work So, you want to deploy on the edge? (15 minute read) Website very fast in the US, but slow in Europe or China? Go to the edge. Move your read-data to the customer. The article has more insights. My prediction: In the future databases will come with those special batteries included, for now you might hack something. Or use two of my favorite databases: https://zknill.io/posts/edge-database/ Introducing Predictive Debugging: A Game-Changing Look into the Future (9 minute read) Debugging 2023âmany developers are still using Println() to debug their code. I do too! Not sure why this is the case when there are excellent debuggers around. Iâm a Jetbrains user for more than 20 years, and if there is a bug, I use the debugger. To learn what is going on, I use Println(). This new debugger from Jetbrains really seems to be a game changer. It looks from the current line forward and shows you how the program will act, without you stepping through it. A huge improvement to understanding what is going onâso also a tool not only for debugging but onboarding. Announcing OverflowAI (14 minute read) Stackoverflow wants to integrate AI. It seems as though they want to walk a thin line. âAs I promised when we announced our goal of investing in AI, our approach is unique. Our aim is to stay true to the original promise of Stack Overflow, keeping our developer community at the centerâ which sounds like car manufacturers who think they can keep their USP in gas-powered cars by using Hydrogen. Reality will blow Hydrogen in cars away just as AI will blow Stackoverflow away. Their only chance to survive would be to take their brand and go full into AI. But this is why companies rise and fall. And again, I guess they have read Innovatorâs Dilemma and laughed at the company examples. Are you laughing too? I accidentally enabled HSTSâon localhost (6 minute read) I encounter too many CTOs who do not have the basic security fixed for their websites and APIs. But be careful: you can shoot yourself into the foot, especially with HPKP. https://bartwullems.blogspot.com/2023/07/help-i-accidently-enabled-hstson.html The problem with velocity (14 minute read) Velocity is relevant to opportunity-driven feature factories. Velocity is not relevant to vision-driven companies. (10 minute read) No. https://www.bbc.com/news/business-66086450 Selecting the right product metrics (10 minute read) We talk a lot about perfect execution and velocity, but not about product metrics. We build bad features faster and faster. You the CTO are responsible for delivering the right features, not the wrong ones faster. Itâs not âThe PM made me code itâ anymore. So start talking about product metrics today. https://longform.asmartbear.com/product-metrics/ Research: Why Employees Accept Lower Pay at Mission-Oriented Companies (5 minute read) BE VISION DRIVEN! Have a social mission. But be aware that you might cheat employees out of money. âConsistently, job candidates in the social impact framing condition reported that asking for higher pay would likely be viewed as greedy and inappropriate by the hiring organization. As a result, they refrained from negotiating.â Evil CEOs will use this of course. Reflecting on this, is this the reason for the trend in social startups? Nah, canât be. https://hbr.org/2023/07/research-why-employees-accept-lower-pay-at-mission-oriented-companies Join the CTO newsletter! | |
